It is very easy to start a new piece. However, it is relatively hard to complete a piece started at a workshop setting. The aim of this workshop is to complete pieces started at this course. The workshop will cover techniques of “painting” with enamel, called limoges. The finalized enamel pieces will be set as pendants, earrings, or rings. During each session, the basic jewelry making techniques will be demonstrated, including soldering, forming, setting, chain making, and finishing. Open to all skill levels.

This workshop will provide an opportunity for both beginners and advanced enamelists to learn how to convey drawings and narrative images on enameled steel and copper using a technique known as limoges, but with non-traditional methods. The aesthetic effects will be accomplished using graphite and underglaze pencils, underglaze crayons, overglaze china paints, and watercolor enamels. The class will additionally utilize basic enameling techniques, as well as image transferring processes using decals and the Fab Lab’s laser etching system. Each step of the metalsmithing and jewelry making processes will be demonstrated during this workshop.

Mi-Sook Hur’s lecture will be based on her artistic journey, as well as on how her nostalgic memories and their meaning are portrayed within her work. She was born and raised in a small farm in South Korea, and will speak about the impact of her early background and environment on her work. She is a metalsmith, jeweler, and enamelist, but also employs a wide variety of other media. Her talk will also include the process of limoges in her recent enamel feather series.
